Case Study: Energy

Cannelton Locks & Dam

Working with Sylvan Mechanical, we were asked to provide a ventilation system for a new hydro-electric dam being built in Cannelton, Kentucky.

Project Size$800K
Square Feet80,000+
LocationHawesville, KY
PartnerWalsh
Contract TypeBid & Spec
ArchitectMWH Americas, Inc.
ClientAmerican Municipal Power, Inc.

Challenge

The ventilation system needed to be embedded into the concrete walls of the dam structure during construction. That meant that we needed to pay critical attention to the project fabrication and installation sequence, and we needed to meet heavy industrial welding standards in the duct construction.

Solution

Using the owner's sequence schedule to guide us, we created a detailed model of the system, fabricated the necessary parts, and mapped out a detailed installation schedule. McShane field labor worked in unison with the concrete pours to ensure the placement and support of all ducts.

Process

The heavy-duty construction of the dam required us to synchronize our schedules to the existing plans with highly coordinated trade site logistics. We used our pre-fabrication capabilities to create custom pieces that fit the project's exacting specifications, and the build required critical welding processes.

Results

Over a year and a half, we installed 233,000 lbs of custom-welded ducts in coordination with each existing phase of concrete construction without fail.
